Engineer and automotive pioneer. Built the first automobile with a four-stroke engine.Born on 25 November 1844 in Mühlburg and died on 4 April 1929 in Ladenburg. After studying at the Polytechnicum in Karlsruhe, Benz founded his first company in Mannheim in 1871. In 1878/79, Benz developed a two-stroke engine and finally, in 1885, the first automobile with a four-stroke engine and electric ignition. Although steam-powered cars and steam buses already existed, this automobile was considered the first passenger car. This led to the issuance of the world's first driver's licence in 1888. However, the first test of the automobile's endurance was carried out by his wife Berta Benz, who also wrote a small chapter in automotive history with the first cross-country trip of more than 100 km. Our coffee is dedicated to a pioneer who redefined mobility. His vision, courage, and unwavering inventive spirit are also reflected in this exceptional cuvée Flavors that drive you: Orange, caramel, cashew—a profile that surprises with clarity, warmth, and structure. Poet and philosopher. A life between hymn and madness.Born on 20 March 1770 in Lauffen, died on 7 June 1843 in Tübingen. How can one describe Hölderlin in clear, concise terms? It is impossible to grasp this poet and philosopher outside of his works. On the one hand, he was hopeful and life-affirming; on the other, he was sad, contradictory and weary of life. At this point, all we can do is refer to his works and invite you to engage with this artist.‘In your valleys my heart awoke to life, your waves played around me, and all the lovely hills that you know, wanderer, are familiar to me. On their peaks, the air of heaven often relieved me of the pain of bondage; and from the valley, like life from the cup of joy, the bluish silver wave shone.’This coffee pays homage to one of the most dazzling poets and philosophers of German idealism. Hölderlin defies clear description—hopeful and light-filled in his hymns, yet marked by inner turmoil and existential heaviness. His work remains the only possible access to a life that oscillated between inspiration and madness. His poetic landscapes—imbued with valleys, hills, water, and freedom—invite us to this day to engage with language as an experience.Flavours that seem poetic:Blackberry, honey, acacia blossom—a multi-layered, finely structured profile with floral elegance. Physician and poet. Prominent representative of the Sturm und Drang movement in world literature.Born on 10 November 1759 in Marbach, died on 9 May 1805 in Weimar. When one thinks of Schiller, one first thinks of Weimar Classicism, his rivalry and later friendship with Goethe, not necessarily his birthplace, which, however, can point to a long tradition of visitors due to its famous son. Schiller's theatre debut, ‘Die Räuber’ (The Robbers), is considered part of the Sturm und Drang movement, and his time with Goethe and the term ‘Weimar Classicism’ coined during this period are famous. His later works show influences from Kant. And who among us has not at least heard or read ‘Das Lied von der Glocke’ (The Song of the Bell) at school at some point, if not had to learn it by heart? This coffee honors one of the most influential authors in German literature. Schiller, a physician, playwright, and philosopher, made his mark on the Sturm und Drang era with his theatrical debut, “Die Räuber” (The Robbers). His close connection to Goethe, their time together in Weimar, and his later philosophical influences—especially Kant—made him an indispensable voice of the Classical period. Many of his works continue to shape education, culture, and language to this day.Flavors that draw a clear line:Grapefruit, agave syrup, green apple—a lively, bright profile with precise acidity and a fruity core. Cuvée:70% Bourbon Tekisic, fully washed (Finca La Buena Esperanza, El Salvador)30% Sarchimor, fully washed (Finca Hamburgo, Mexico)

Robber baron and freedom fighter. Led the ‘Odenwald Band’ in the Peasants' WarBorn around 1480 in Jagsthausen, died around 1562 at Hornberg Castle. If anyone deserves the title ‘mighty warrior’, it is Götz von Berlichingen. During his training, he discovered his love of weaponry at the age of 17 and practised it throughout his life. Götz's life was marked by one feud after another. In 1504, he lost his hand, and the prosthesis earned him the nickname ‘with the iron hand’. His participation in the Peasants' War initially led to a conviction that forced Götz to remain exclusively at Hornberg Castle. In 1540, the emperor overturned this verdict and placed Götz under his protection. In 1544, Götz von Berlichingen finally retired to Hornberg Castle after renewed fighting, and things quietened down around him. Goethe created a literary monument to Götz von Berlichingen by putting the Swabian greeting in his mouth. Our coffee honors a man whose life was marked by courage, resilience, and unyielding will. Götz von Berlichingen, the legendary knight “with the iron hand,” fought in feuds for decades, led the Odenwald militia in the Peasants' War, and, despite being convicted, was later placed under the protection of the emperor. His story is rough, powerful—and full of personality. Flavors that show stability: popcorn, nougat, chestnut blossom—an unusual profile that combines strength and delicacy. Duchess of Orléans and sister-in-law of Louis XIV. A non-conformist free spirit at the court of the Sun KingElisabeth Charlotte von der Pfalz, born on 27 May 1652 in Heidelberg, died on 8 December 1722 near Paris. As a child, she preferred to play outside and climb trees, but of course she enjoyed a courtly upbringing, in which the teaching of religious tolerance stood out. Liselotte von der Pfalz's love of letter writing has left us with valuable, open and candid insights into court life at that time. Our homage to her is characterised by liberal thinking in a golden cage. This coffee pays homage to a woman who maintained her independence even at the court of the Sun King. Liselotte von der Pfalz, fun-loving, keenly observant, and unconventional, grew up between courtly etiquette and free spirit. Her countless letters open an honest, blunt window into life at the French court—humorous, direct, and full of character. A life between duty and freedom that continues to fascinate to this day.Flavours that unfold clarity:Bergamot, green apple, lemongrass – a fresh, citrusy profile with a precise structure. Literary figure and globetrotter. Travelled down the Neckar River on a raft.Born Samuel Langhorne Clemens on 30 November 1835 in Florida, died on 21 April 1910 in Redding. During a trip through Germany and Europe in 1878, Twain stayed in Heilbronn for a while and, inspired by watching the raftsmen on the Neckar, Mark Twain wanted to travel down the Neckar himself on a raft. "The motion of a raft is just right – it is calm, gliding, gentle and silent. It calms all feverish activity, lulls all nervous haste and impatience to sleep, and under its soothing influence, all the anger, vexation and sorrow that torment the mind disappear, and life becomes a dream, a magic, a deep and silent rapture." (A Tramp Abroad, Mark Twain)Whether the Neckar River, in addition to inspiring writers, also influences inventiveness is not known, but it was home to many pioneers. This coffee pays tribute to an author who not only travelled the world, but also observed it with a keen eye and great fascination. During his trip to Europe in 1878, Mark Twain stayed in Heilbronn – and was inspired by the raftsmen on the Neckar to take his own raft trip. The calm, gentle movement of the water became a symbol of serenity and clarity for him. Impressions from this trip later found their way into his work ‘Huckleberry Finn’.Flavours that bring peace and tranquillity:nougat, caramel, orange – a well-rounded, soft and melting profile, carried by delicate citrus notes.Cuvée:40% Catuai vermelho, pulped natural (Fazendas Dutra, Brazil)30% Catuai vermelho, natural (Fazendas Dutra, Brazil)30% Catuai, fully washed (Finca Hamburgo, Mexico).

The coffee blend ‘King Wilhelm II of Württemberg’ is also the official ‘Wilhelma coffee’, and a portion of the sales proceeds goes towards establishing and maintaining the ‘International Conservation Collection of Coffee Varieties’ at Wilhelma in Stuttgart. This means that every purchase directly and immediately supports the preservation of the biodiversity of coffee varieties worldwide.Coffee is one of the most popular beverages worldwide. The abundance of specialities and creations continues to grow, but studies show that the diversity of coffee plants themselves is at risk. As a zoological and botanical garden, Wilhelma in Stuttgart is therefore establishing an ‘International Conservation Collection for Coffee Varieties’, which it presented for the first time at INTERGASTRA, the trade fair for gastronomy and the hotel industry, in February 2020. 60 percent of wild coffee species are considered threatened with extinction. ‘Species conservation is a central concern for us, both for plants and animals,’ said Wilhelma Director Dr Thomas Kölpin. ‘In the long term, it can only be successful if there is a global rethink, but we can contribute locally with this conservation breeding programme to ensure that the species are not lost entirely.’ At INTERGASTRA, plantation owners among the exhibitors handed over further seeds to Kölpin and Peter Hauk, Minister for Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection. ‘Biodiversity is an irreplaceable asset,’ emphasised Hauk. "That is why the state of Baden-Württemberg is officially registering the project as a conservation collection. With more than 60 rare varieties and species, it is already one of the most important collections internationally. This project is very much in line with our intention to strengthen regionality and thus protect the climate."The background to this is that of the more than 100 known species of coffee plants, only three are used commercially on a large scale: Coffea Canephora (known as Robusta) is considered a mass product, while Coffea Arabica is regarded as a premium variety. The third variety used, Coffea Liberica, bears relatively little fruit on tall trees, which is why its use is less attractive economically. However, breeders have produced over 500 varieties from these three species over the past 500 years. ‘These varieties not only differ in appearance and taste,’ explained Dr Björn Schäfer, head of the botany department at Wilhelma, ‘they have developed individual characteristics that allow them to cope with different soils, climatic conditions and harmful fungi, viruses or bacteria.’ Extreme weather conditions are on the rise, and individual pest species can completely destroy a monoculture. For example, the most important banana variety, ‘Cavendish,’ is dying out worldwide due to a harmful fungus because only genetic clones that are defenceless against the pathogen are cultivated everywhere. ‘That is why it is crucial to preserve coffee plants with versatile defences for future generations,’ says Schäfer. Wilhelma therefore obtains the varieties outside their natural growing areas in case natural disasters such as floods, droughts, fires or epidemics of plant diseases destroy them in their natural habitats.‘This can only succeed with an intercontinental network, but the great interest shown by coffee farmers is helping us,’ says Dr Steffen Schwarz from the Coffee Consulate. The independent training and research centre in Mannheim has established contacts with high-quality plantations in many countries for the project. Wilhelma now grows coffee from Brazil, China, El Salvador, India, Malaysia, Mexico and Thailand. Wilhelma is now represented at the trade fair to engage in conversation with guests at the Coffee Summit Stuttgart. ‘Our goal is to attract plantation owners from other important coffee regions that are not yet represented in the project,’ says Schäfer. ‘We would be very pleased to welcome new additions from Ethiopia, Guatemala, Yemen, Kenya, Colombia, Oman, Peru and Vietnam, for example.’As ambassadors for the new collection, the partners have developed their own ‘Wilhelmakaffee’ coffee. It was available for tasting at the trade fair. The coffee cherries used to make it come exclusively from the sustainable plantations of the cooperation partners. The Neckar roasting plant in Mannheim creates a cuvée from a blend of Pacamara and Old Paradenia beans. During an initial tasting, coffee connoisseurs detected nuances of orange, elderflower and caramel. A portion of the proceeds will go towards expanding the international conservation collection. Some of the coffee bushes can be seen year-round in the Moorish House in the tropical crops section of the Zoological and Botanical Garden in Stuttgart. In future, there will also be an annual exhibition of the growing coffee plant collection in February, when it bears fruit. This unique coffee cuvée was composed from selected parcel coffees from our partner plantations, which participate in Wilhelma's ‘International Conservation Collection of Coffee Varieties’ and thus preserve the diversity of coffee varieties for future generations.Aromas:Orange, elderflower, caramelBlend:80% Yellow Pacamara, pulped natural (Fazendas Dutra, Brazil)20% Old Paradenia, fully washed (Badra Estates, India)
